When a struggling artist unexpectedly learns that a woman he
dated for five weeks, a month ago, is pregnant with his baby; he
sets out on a journey to discover the meaning of family,
fatherhood and art while juggling life as inner-city
schoolteacher.
This is the starting point of CHILD’S PLAY, a one-man show
written and performed by Alan Aymie, directed by Helen Hayes
nominated actor and director James Brown- Orleans. CHILD’S PLAY
will be seen again this fall in Los Angeles.
With the struggles of one particular classroom in South Central
Los Angeles as the backdrop; CHILD’S PLAY takes us from the
pristine walls of the UCLA Medical Center to the studio audience
of the David Letterman show. While Aymie tries to balance life
as an artist and teacher and searches for his place in his
child’s life, he accidentally stumbles across the meaning of
family.
Portraying over thirty-different characters, in a non-stop
whirlwind odyssey of the nine months leading up to the birth of
his daughter, Aymie’s performance is a tour de force that has
drawn comparisons to other performance artists such as John
Leguizamo and Spalding Gray.
Critics have called “CHILD’S PLAY”, “moving…forceful...a
testimony to the travails of adult responsibility and
fatherhood”. A critic for the LA WEEKLY writes, “What’s
remarkable about Alan Aymie’s one-man show is the abundant
energy, tight scripting, and furious pacing. …with his
spitfire delivery, the indefatigable performer never misses a
beat.”
“CHILD’S PLAY” was originally produced at The Hudson Theater in
Los Angeles before moving on to The PULSE ENSEMBLE Theater in
Manhattan’s storied, Theater Row. The show has also been seen
at the Zephyr Theater, the McCadden Theater’s SOLO FESTIVAL,
THEATER 150 in Ojai, The HBO/Warner Bros. Workspace and most
recently The Aspen Comedy Festival. |
